Overview

Verify connects to the Document Verification Service (DVS), a secure government system for checking identity documents. Because you're working with sensitive personal information every time you run a search, there are clear rules about how that information can be used and protected.

Agreeing to these terms is mandatory. The first time you use Verify, you'll be prompted to read and accept them, and you won't be able to start searching until you have.

Most of what follows comes down to one principle: only search when you have a genuine reason and the person's consent, and treat everything you see with the highest level of care.

Your responsibilities

When you use Verify, you agree to the following:

• You should always treat the information within Verify and the DVS with the highest level of security.
• You must have a genuine reason to perform a search. For example, a member has requested a transaction and, to complete it, you need to run a verification search to meet your Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing (AML/CTF) and Know Your Customer (KYC) obligations.
• You must always have the express written or verbal consent of the individual before conducting a search for them. It's recommended you keep a copy of that consent, such as an email or recording.
• You must not disclose any Australian Government identifier (ID number) — for example a driver's licence number, passport number, or Medicare number — to any third party.
• You should not store any details about the search (ID numbers, name, dates of birth, expiry dates, issue dates) unless absolutely necessary. Storing this data is a significant risk to your member if it's ever lost or stolen.
• You must take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification, or disclosure.
• You must comply with your organisation's privacy policy and your obligations under the Privacy Act.

‍Misusing Verify or the DVS can carry serious consequences. You may be subject to fines and criminal legal action by the Australian Federal Government, including imprisonment.
