Overview
Before you can verify identity documents in CX Platform, your organisation needs to be registered with the Document Verification Service (DVS) as a Business User. The DVS is an Australian Government service that checks an identity document, such as a driver licence or passport, against the records held by the agency that issued it, in real time.
Registering as a Business User is what gives you permission to send those checks through. It's a one-off approval, and it's something we work through with you during platform configuration and onboarding, so you're not left to navigate it on your own.
One thing worth knowing up front: the DVS confirms whether a document's details match the issuing record. It supports your existing identity checks rather than replacing them, so it's used as one part of how you confirm who someone is, not the sole basis for a decision.
We'll handle this with you
Registration isn't something you complete alone. During onboarding, our team works alongside you to prepare and submit your Business User application and to set up the connection that lets CX Platform talk to the DVS.
Why you need to be a Business User
The DVS only accepts checks from organisations it has approved. A Business User is a private organisation doing business in Australia or New Zealand that's been registered to use the service through a gateway service provider, the secure connection that carries your checks to the DVS and brings the results back.
Until your registration is approved and that connection is live, document checks can't run. Getting this in place is why DVS registration is part of your initial setup.
How registration works
Here's the path from start to approved, and where we step in along the way.
- Connect through a gateway service provider. Business Users reach the DVS through a gateway service provider, and you'll need an agreement in place with one before you apply. We'll help you understand this part and get it sorted.
- Complete your Business User application. You'll fill in either the online or paper-based form, and we'll work through it with you so the details are right the first time.
- Submit it to the DVS for assessment. If the application is sent by email, the DVS asks that you include DVS Registration Application in the subject line.
- Wait for approval. The DVS reviews your application and confirms whether you meet the criteria for access to the service.
How long it takes
As a rough guide, the DVS takes around one to two weeks to process a Business User application, and setting up the connection through your gateway service provider takes a further one to two weeks. We'll keep you posted on where things are at, so you'll always know what's left before you can go live.
A note on registration
Once your Business User registration is approved and the connection is live, you're ready to start running document checks in CX Platform. We'll let you know the moment everything's in place. You can find the full government detail on the DVS Business User page.
