CORE MODULE

Customise Text, Labels and Error Messages

What you'll learn in this guide

How to tailor the wording your customers and administrators see throughout the verification process — from camera prompts to error messages — so it fits your audience, your brand, and your compliance needs.

Overview

The Verify module ships with sensible default wording for every prompt, instruction, and message someone encounters while proving their identity. But language that works for one audience won't always work for another, so you can rewrite almost any piece of text to suit your own customers, tone, and rules.

Clear, relevant wording makes the whole process easier to follow and helps people get through it without getting stuck. It also lets you keep messages on-brand and meet accessibility, language, and regulatory requirements.

You'll find customisable text on both sides of Verify — the customer-facing experience and the admin tools — so you can fine-tune exactly what each group sees.

Where you can edit custom text

Custom wording isn't limited to one screen. Here's where you can adjust it:

  • Camera instructions and messages — permission prompts, intro text, the instructions for each camera step, error messages, and the terms shown for optical character recognition (OCR) processing.
  • Document text blocks — headings, preview, and summary help text for supported document types, including Centrelink, the Commonwealth electoral roll, Medicare, passports, and visas.
  • Error messages — the text shown for common user, system, and verification errors, so people get precise, helpful guidance whenever something goes wrong.
  • Client Portal and Admin Portal — address verification prompts, consent messages, field labels (such as "member number" or "customer"), and general interface guidance to fit your business rules.
  • Module and feature labels — the instructional and field text for enabled modules like politically exposed persons (PEP) screening and superannuation.

Good to know
‍
Text, labels, and error messages can be customised in the Admin Workflow, the JavaScript Widget, and at a Policy level — so you can set wording broadly or tailor it to a specific workflow when you need to.

‍

Update your text and descriptions

Once you know what you'd like to change, updating it only takes a few clicks.

  1. Open the Verify module.
  2. Select Edit settings from the navigation.
  3. Browse the tabs — such as Client Portal and Admin Portal — to find lists of configurable entries, each with a Name, Value, and Description.
  4. Click the View or Edit icon next to the entry you want to change.
  5. Enter your new wording and save your changes.

‍

You don't have to change everything
‍
Every field comes with a default, so you only need to touch the entries that matter to you. Leave the rest as they are and they'll keep working out of the box.

‍

That's it — your updated wording will now show up wherever that text appears. You can come back and adjust any entry whenever your tone, language, or compliance needs change.

Why customise your text?

A few good reasons to make the wording your own:

  • Make instructions and error messages easy to understand for your particular customer base.
  • Support accessibility, inclusivity, and multiple languages wherever you need to.
  • Keep every message in line with your brand guidelines and your legal and compliance obligations.
