Overview
Templates in CX Platform live in three states: drafts, the current version, and previous versions. Drafts are where you build, tweak, and test your work without anything going out the door. The current version is what your Application actually uses when it sends a communication. Previous versions are older current versions that have been replaced — kept on hand so you can refer back or roll back if you need to.
Publishing a draft as the current version is how you bridge the gap — taking the work you've built up and promoting it to live. Until you publish a draft, there won't be a current version available to send from, and the Current version section of your template will show No current version found.
You can keep as many drafts as you like in the Drafts section, but only one current version can be live at a time. When you publish a new draft, it takes over the live slot and the previous current version moves into Previous versions.
Heads up
Publishing replaces your current version, but it isn't lost. The old version automatically moves to Previous versions, so you can always go back to it later if you need to.
Publish a draft as the current version
- Open the Application you're working in and click the Templates tab.
- Scroll to the Drafts section and find the version you want to publish.
- Click the Actions dropdown on the right hand side of the draft.
- Select Publish as current version from the menu.
- You'll see a confirmation prompt letting you know all future sends will use this template. Click Set as current to go ahead, or Cancel if you've changed your mind.
That's it — your draft is now live. You'll see it appear in the Current version section below your drafts, ready to be used the next time your Application sends.
What happens to your drafts
Publishing doesn't delete or move your drafts — they stay exactly where they are in the Drafts section, untouched. That means you can keep iterating on a new version while the published one runs in the background, and you've always got a record of earlier work to refer back to.
If you need to make further changes to the version that's now live, the cleanest approach is to use Copy to new draft on the current version, edit the copy, and publish it when you're ready. That way you're never editing live content directly.
