Overview
As you build and refine your communications over time, you'll end up with templates that are no longer in use — early drafts that didn't make the cut, old versions that have been replaced, or test templates created during setup. Deleting these keeps your Templates section tidy and makes it easier to find the versions that matter.
Deletion happens at the version level. Each template can have multiple versions stacked under Drafts, Current version, and Previous versions, and you delete them one version at a time using the Actions menu.
You can't delete the current version
The current version is the one actively being used to send communications, so the platform won't let you delete it directly. If you need to remove it, you'll first need to promote a different version to current. There's a quick walkthrough for this further down.
Delete a template version
- Open the Application that contains the template you want to delete.
- Click the Templates tab to see the full list of versions, grouped under Drafts, Current version, and Previous versions.
- Find the version you want to remove, then click the Actions button on the right hand side of that version.
- From the dropdown, select Delete.
- You'll see a confirmation prompt asking "Are you sure you want to delete all channel templates for Version X?" Click Delete to confirm, or Cancel if you've changed your mind.
That's it — the version and all of its channel templates are removed. The other versions in the template stay exactly where they were.
Quick tip
If you're tidying up rather than fixing a problem, it's worth taking a quick look at Previous versions first. These are usually safe to remove, whereas drafts you're still iterating on are best left alone until you're sure.
What if you need to delete the current version?
If you try to delete the version that's currently set as the active one, you'll see an error letting you know it can't be removed while it's in use:
"Error - cannot delete current template. Create a new draft, assign the new draft to current, and then delete."
It's a small bit of housekeeping rather than anything tricky. Here's how to work around it:
- In the Templates tab, click + Add new at the top of the Drafts section to create a new draft.
- Configure the new draft so it's ready to take over — you can copy from an existing version if you'd rather not start from scratch.
- Promote the new draft to current by selecting Actions next to it and clicking Publish as current version.
- Once the new version is current, the old version drops down into Previous versions and can be deleted using the steps above.
- Your old version is now gone, and the Application is sending using the new current version you just promoted.
